If you have ever shucked an ear of corn you have likely discarded corn silk. The tassels on the ends of ripe corn are usually a waste product, but can be brewed into a delicious and nutritious tea. The glossy strands were sacred to the Native Americans as well as indigenous tribes in Central and South America where corn was a staple crop.

When brewed, corn silk tea has a mild and earthy flavor. The strands are packed with vitamins C and K and also potassium. The high polyphenol content helps make corn silk a great protector against free radical damage in the body. Corn silk is often used as a diuretic and support for the urinary system. The flavonoids present in corn silk can also have anti-inflammatory effects and may help to decrease oxidative stress.

Brewed a pot after my last corn harvest and was surprised how sweet and mellow it came out, like a gentle hay tea with a hint of vanilla. I've been drinking it warm before bed and it's become a calming little ritual.

Brewed a pot this morning and the flavor is surprisingly mellow and slightly sweet, nothing like I expected from dried plant material. The loose leaf form steeps nicely without turning bitter, even when I left the bag in a little too long. Great way to use something I'd normally just toss in the com

I was never sure what to do with the silk when I shucked corn, so finding it as a loose-leaf tea felt like a clever little discovery. Steeped a cup this morning and the flavor is pleasantly mild, not at all what I expected from something usually thrown away.
