Fennel has been prized by various civilizations for its properties as a culinary, medicinal and sacred herb. Fennel is a member of the Apiacae family. The plant grows with delicate and sweet-smelling yellow blooms that ripen into fruit (fennel seed). Fennel can be grown as annuals, biennials or perennials and slightly resembles its cousin, dill.

Fennel has been widely used for healthy digestion and was traditionally used to treat gas and bloating due to its carminative nature. Fennel is also a vegetable, and is regularly consumed in aromatic Mediterranean dishes. Its mildly sweet flavor is reminiscent of licorice or anise. As a tea, fennel seeds can be steeped and consumed before a meal which may help to stimulate the appetite. After meals, it can be sipped and may aid in digestion.
